The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) have confirmed the deaths of two armed bandits during separate security operations aimed at curbing livestock theft in Northern Uganda.
On Tuesday afternoon, UPDF troops from the 75 Battalion, acting on intelligence reports, pursued suspected cattle rustlers believed to have crossed into Uganda from South Sudan.
The chase led them to Pii Pee Village, where an armed suspect identified as Oryema Payas, a resident of Obutuce Village in Namukora North Sub-County, Kitgum District, was gunned down after a confrontation.
In a parallel operation, soldiers from the 81 Battalion tracked and engaged another suspect in Lira Kato Sub-County, Agago District.
The suspect, also armed, was fatally shot as the soldiers intensified efforts to stamp out cross-border cattle raids.
Col David Opeero, Deputy Commander of the 5 Infantry Division, confirmed both incidents and reiterated the army’s commitment to safeguarding communities.
Meanwhile, Col Patrick Opira of the 505 Brigade lauded the public for actively supporting the army through timely information.
The UPDF has recovered several stolen animals and weapons since the year began, and officials say all livestock is being returned to the rightful owners.
