Tragedy struck in Uganda’s eastern district of Kapchorwa on Wednesday when a truck carrying cattle traders overturned, leaving nine people dead and ten others critically injured.
The accident occurred along the Kapchorwa–Suam road, a route known for its sharp bends and treacherous terrain.
According to eyewitnesses, the truck was descending a steep slope at high speed when the driver reportedly lost control.
The vehicle veered off the road and rolled several times before coming to a halt in a ditch. Many of the victims were flung from the truck during the crash, and some were pinned under the wreckage.
Authorities have confirmed that the deceased were all cattle traders en route to a local livestock market.
The injured were rushed to Kapchorwa Hospital and other nearby health centers, where several are reported to be in critical condition.
Local residents who arrived at the scene shortly after the accident blamed reckless driving and overloading as possible causes.
“That road is dangerous, especially when drivers speed or carry more passengers and goods than the truck can handle,” said a witness.
Police from the Sipi region have launched an investigation into the incident and called for improved road safety awareness, particularly among long-distance livestock transporters.
They also appealed to transporters to prioritize safety over profit.
The tragic event has sparked grief in the cattle-trading community, with several families mourning the loss of loved ones.
Kapchorwa district leaders have promised to support the affected families and pledged to work with traffic police to enhance safety measures on the region’s roads.
As the nation grapples with the rising number of road accidents, the Kapchorwa tragedy serves as another grim reminder of the urgent need for stricter road regulations and enforcement.
