Ugandan long-distance runner Jacob Kiplimo made a powerful statement in his marathon debut, securing second place at the 2025 London Marathon.
In his first appearance over the full 42-kilometre distance at a World Marathon Major event, Kiplimo crossed the finish line in an impressive time of 2:03:37.
The race was ultimately won by Kenya’s Sebastian Sawe, who produced a commanding performance to claim victory with a time of 2:02:27. Sawe, one of Kenya’s rising stars in long-distance running, pulled away from Kiplimo in the final stages, finishing one minute and ten seconds ahead.
Despite missing out on the top spot, Kiplimo’s performance was remarkable, particularly given that it was his first attempt at the marathon distance.
Already known for his achievements in cross country and half-marathon events, the 23-year-old showed that he is more than capable of competing among the world’s best over 42 kilometres.
Kiplimo stayed with the lead pack for much of the race, displaying patience and tactical awareness on the streets of London.
As the kilometres wore on, it became a battle of endurance between him and Sawe. Kiplimo responded to Sawe’s surges up to the 35km mark, but eventually the Kenyan’s relentless pace proved decisive.
Speaking after the race, Kiplimo expressed satisfaction with his performance. “It was my first marathon and I am happy with how I handled the distance,” he said. “There is a lot to learn, but this is just the beginning.”
For Uganda, Kiplimo’s showing marks a significant step forward in the marathon scene, where East African rivals Kenya and Ethiopia have traditionally dominated. His strong debut suggests that he could soon challenge for major titles if he continues to develop at the distance.
Meanwhile, Sawe’s victory adds another accolade to his growing reputation. Having already impressed in shorter road races, his London triumph confirms his place among the elite marathoners of his generation.
The 2025 London Marathon once again lived up to its reputation for producing fast times and thrilling competition, with several athletes posting personal bests.
But it was Kiplimo’s poised and promising debut that stood out, hinting at even greater achievements in the seasons to come.
As the marathon calendar moves forward, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how quickly Kiplimo can build on this early success.
