A serious road accident has happened today along the Kapchorwa-Mbale highway in Kapchorwa District, leaving nine people dead and three others injured. The crash occurred at around 12:40 p.m. in an area known as Kapwachiti.
According to SP Michael Kananura, the vehicle involved was carrying both cows and people. It was going downhill when the driver reportedly lost control due to brake failure. The vehicle overturned, leading to the tragic loss of life.
All the victims were on the same vehicle at the time of the crash. The nine people who died passed away on the spot, while the three who were injured were rushed to a nearby health facility for emergency treatment. Their current condition has not yet been shared with the public.
Police say that investigations are ongoing to find out exactly what happened. So far, they believe that the vehicle’s brakes may have failed while it was moving on a slope, which made it difficult for the driver to control. The names of the victims have not been released yet, as their families are still being informed.
SP Kananura also confirmed that the vehicle was transporting cows at the same time as people. This type of arrangement is known to be risky, especially on steep roads. It is still not clear how many people were on the vehicle in total, or whether it was licensed to carry passengers.
Officers arrived at the scene shortly after the crash was reported. They worked with local residents to help the injured and move the bodies. Photos from the site show the damaged vehicle lying on its side, with signs of the animals and passengers it was carrying.
Authorities have called on all drivers and vehicle owners to make sure their vehicles are in good working condition, especially the brakes. They also remind the public that vehicles meant to carry goods like cattle should not be used to carry passengers.
This accident has brought great sadness to the people of Kapchorwa District and the surrounding areas. Many residents gathered at the scene as news of the accident spread. Some were seen crying, while others tried to help the rescue teams.
Police are still collecting more information and have promised to give updates once the full report is ready. The crash is a reminder of the dangers on Uganda’s roads and the importance of following traffic and safety rules.
This is a developing story. Further details will be shared when available.
