Bishop Cornelius Kateregga Bakubanja of the Orthodox Anglican Church in Uganda has opened up about long-standing challenges in his marriage, revealing that he has not had any physical contact with his wife since 2009.
Kateregga, 68, is a resident of Kyotera District and runs several schools and businesses. He has been married to his wife, Zawedde, for about 40 years, and together they have six children.
The bishop alleges that his wife and children have conspired to take over his property. According to him, some land titles are no longer in his possession, and he fears more of his assets could be sold off without his consent.
He further claims that his family is plotting to declare him mentally unstable so that he can be admitted to Butabika Mental Hospital, which would allow them to control his properties.
Kateregga says he was forced out of his marital home and now lives in a room within one of his schools. He compared his marriage to the celibate life of Catholic priests and nuns, saying he has lived without intimacy for nearly 15 years.
The bishop says he is speaking out not only for himself but also to encourage other religious leaders and men facing similar struggles in their families to come forward. He argues that many clerics maintain a polished public image while silently enduring hardship at home.
Instead of remaining silent for the sake of reputation, Kateregga urges fellow church leaders to seek justice and confront family disputes openly.
