Church Celebrates as Besigye ‘Gives Life to Jesus’ in Luzira Prison

Over the weekend, Uganda’s Born-Again Faith community rejoiced at the news that Col Dr Kizza Besigye, an imprisoned opposition leader, has embraced salvation while incarcerated in Luzira Prison.

Urban pastors praised the event as a divine act. “This is the work of the Lord… Scripture states that no one can come to the Son unless drawn by the Father,” remarked Rev Fredrick Ssemazzi of Grace Assemblies church during his Sunday sermon.

Reports surfaced late last week in the media indicating that Besigye had accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior.

Mubarak Munyagwa Sserunga, the former Lawempe South MP, was cited saying he personally verified this transformation during a recent visit to check on Dr Besigye in Luzira.

Besigye is currently facing treason charges after being apprehended by Ugandan security forces in Kenya.

Towards the end of last week, Besigye, along with his co-accused, Obeid Lutale, submitted a bail application to the High Court Criminal Division.

In their combined plea, 68-year-olds Lutaale and Besigye contended that they are respectable citizens of advanced age, charged with treason and misprison—offenses they argue are eligible for bail under the High Court’s jurisdiction.
