Enugu, Nigeria – A Catholic priest was shot dead on Friday, September 19, 2025, after gunmen on a motorbike ambushed his vehicle in Nsukka, Enugu State.
The victim, Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya, was the parish priest of St. Charles Catholic Church in Eha-Ndiagu, Nsukka Local Government Area. Reports say the attackers first opened fire on the tyres of his car along the Eha-Alumona – Eha-Ndiagu road, forcing it to stop. They then shot him several times at close range.
Another person who was in the vehicle survived the attack.
The Catholic Diocese of Nsukka confirmed the killing and described it as a shocking and painful loss. Church leaders have asked the faithful to remain calm and continue praying for peace.
The Enugu State Government condemned the murder and announced a ₦10 million reward for anyone who can provide credible information that will lead to the arrest of the killers.
Police have launched investigations, but so far no arrests have been made. Witnesses say the method of attack suggests the priest was deliberately targeted rather than kidnapped.
The killing has sparked fear and anger among residents, many of whom are calling for stronger security in the area.
