A police officer in Katakwi District has shot and killed a man in what appears to be a dispute linked to a woman.
The incident happened on the morning of Saturday, September 13, 2025, at around 9:00 a.m. in Odoom Village, Guyaguya Sub-county, Usuk County.
The victim, 28-year-old Simon Peter Elangot, was a resident of the same village. He was shot in the stomach by Head Constable Major Bonny Olok, the officer in charge of Odoom Police Post. Witnesses say the bullet tore through his stomach, leaving his intestines exposed, and he died on the spot.
Police had initially claimed that Elangot was resisting arrest after a complaint of grievous harm had been filed against him. But family members tell a different story. His brother, Paul Ocero, also known as Papa Mayor, said the killing was connected to a fight over a woman. He alleged that two weeks earlier, Elangot had confronted the police officer after finding him with his girlfriend.
The clan of Ikocila Ikarebwok has rejected the explanation that the shooting was linked to any criminal case. They insist the matter was personal and have called on government to intervene, saying Elangot’s only wrongdoing was fighting for his relationship.
At the time of reporting, Regional Police Commander East Kyoga, Ibrahim Seiga, said the case file was still being put together and that a full statement would be given later.
Meanwhile, the LCIII chairperson of Guyaguya Sub-county, Charles Ongoletum, urged residents to cooperate with police officers during arrests to avoid further loss of lives.
