Mukono, Uganda. A Trinity bus collided with a commuter train this morning at the Namumira Railway Crossing along Katosi Road in Mukono District. The accident occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m., according to eyewitnesses.
Fortunately, early reports indicate that no lives were lost in the incident. Uganda Railways Corporation has confirmed that no passengers on the train sustained injuries.
Railway Police swiftly arrested the bus driver at the scene. Authorities have not yet released an official statement by the time of this report.
The collision forced the locomotive to derail while departing Mukono for Kampala, leading to the suspension of all morning train services. Officials have stated that updates on the resumption of operations will be communicated in due course.
Railway management noted that the quick reaction of the train driver helped prevent what could have been a major tragedy. The locomotive was traveling at reduced speed due to emergency braking, which minimized the impact.
The Mukono–Kampala commuter train service was relaunched and extended in late 2024 to ease heavy traffic congestion on the Kampala–Jinja highway. Since then, the route has become a popular and affordable transportation option for residents of the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.
Authorities have urged motorists to respect railway right-of-way and avoid attempting to outrun trains at crossings.
“When stopped for the train to pass, please heed. There is no reason to try to outrun the train. By doing so, you put both your life and the lives of passengers at risk,” officials cautioned.
The incident, though described as “minor” compared to its potential severity, underscores the critical importance of road safety around railway lines.
