A Tausi bus traveling from Kampala to Mbarara caught fire on Thursday afternoon, October 3, along the Masaka–Mbarara highway. The incident happened near Manyogoga trading center in Lwengo District.
Police said the fire started from the back part of the bus. According to SP Kasirye Twaha, the Public Relations Officer for Greater Masaka Police, smoke was first seen coming from the rear tyres on the driver’s side. Witnesses said the smoke became heavier as the bus continued moving.
The driver managed to drive the bus up to Kyazanga Town, where he parked it off the road to check what was wrong. By then, flames had already started spreading. He immediately told the passengers to get out of the bus.
Some passengers and the driver tried to use a fire extinguisher to stop the fire, but it was too late. The flames spread very fast, and the bus was soon completely burning. Luckily, everyone on board escaped safely and no one was injured.
Police officers from Lwengo District and Kyazanga Police Station, led by the District Traffic Officer, reached the scene and recorded what had happened. When they arrived, the bus was already destroyed by fire. Traffic police diverted vehicles in both directions to prevent accidents and to give space for emergency response.
The cause of the fire is still not known, and police said investigations are going on.
