A police officer on leave was brutally hacked to death outside his house in Kakamega County on Sunday night. The officer, whose identity has not yet been made public, was attacked by unknown assailants as he returned home at around 9:00 p.m.
According to neighbours, they heard a commotion outside the officer’s compound but were too afraid to come out. His lifeless body was discovered early Monday morning by family members who raised the alarm and called the police.
The officer had been on leave and was living at his rural home in Kakamega at the time of the incident. He was attached to a police station outside the county, where he served before taking his official leave.
Kakamega County Police Commander Joseph Kigen confirmed the incident and said investigations have already begun. He said detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are following leads to find out who was behind the attack and what the motive might have been.
“We are treating this as a murder case. The attackers used sharp weapons and left the body with deep cuts,” said Commander Kigen. He added that the police are questioning neighbours and relatives to help piece together the officer’s last movements and possible suspects.
The body was taken to the Kakamega County General Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
The killing has shocked the community, with residents calling for more police patrols and better security in the area. Some believe the officer may have been targeted, but others think it could be a case of robbery.
Police have urged anyone with information about the murder to come forward and help with the investigation. No arrests had been made by Tuesday evening.
