On Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, Solerg College in Kabale Municipality was struck by tragedy when students and staff discovered the body of a senior six student, Nikita Kiconco, 21, hanging in the dormitory. Kiconco, a resident of Rutoma cell, Nyabikoni ward, Central Division, Kabale District, was found at midday.
According to police, on Friday, April 18, 2025, some students left for the Easter holiday, while about 60, including Kiconco, remained at the school. On Sunday, most students attended prayers at Nyabikoni Church of Uganda, leaving Kiconco and another student, Tusiime Alice, in separate dormitories. Kiconco had reportedly been unwell and was on medication.
Around 1 p.m., students returning from church found Kiconco’s body with a rope tied around her neck, secured to a timber on the roof. The discovery prompted an alarm, alerting the matron, who informed the head teacher. The matter was immediately reported to Kabale Central Police Station.
Police opened a case file for suspected suicide, and the homicide team, led by D/IP Barijunaki Samuel, acting officer in charge of CID at Kabale CPS, visited and documented the scene. The body was retrieved and taken to Kabale Referral Hospital mortuary for examination. Investigations are ongoing.
The school nurse, Ronah Asiimwe, noted that Kiconco had been on mental health medication. A friend, Elizabeth Ainembabazi, described Kiconco as cheerful at times but often preferring solitude. The head teacher, Denis Tumwesigye, stated that Kiconco had been at the school for one month, brought by her sister after a year away from education.
