A Senior One student at Mpanga Senior Secondary School in Kamwenge District, Uganda, tragically passed away in his dormitory on April 15, 2025.
The student, identified as Martin Agaba, was known to have epilepsy and was on prescribed medication. On April 14, he experienced a seizure during his Fine Art examination, but classmates helped stabilize him.
Later that evening, around 5 p.m., Agaba suffered another episode but appeared to recover. He attended evening preparations and returned to his dormitory afterward.
Due to heavy rain and resulting noise that night, no one noticed he became unwell again while sleeping. He passed away alone in his bed.
The following morning, at around 7 a.m., a fellow student attempted to wake him but found him unresponsive. The dormitory master was alerted and confirmed his death.
School authorities informed the police and Agaba’s parents promptly. The body was transported to Rukunyu Hospital for a postmortem examination.
Rwenzori West Police spokesperson SP Vincent Twesige stated that preliminary investigations suggest the death was related to complications from epilepsy.
A teacher, speaking anonymously, expressed sorrow over the incident, noting that Agaba was a promising student. The school community is mourning his loss.
Authorities are continuing investigations to confirm the exact cause of death and ensure appropriate measures are in place for student health and safety.
