The 91st Guild President of Makerere University, Churchill James Ssentamu, has denied issuing an apology that spread across Facebook. Churchill currently faces a challenging situation involving his family and supporters of the National Unity Platform.
The controversy began when he was photographed with President Museveni during an official visit to Makerere University. This action disappointed many National Unity Platform supporters, sparking widespread criticism and insults online. His father publicly disapproved of his son’s behavior in a social media video, calling it shameful.
Nyanzi, a notable figure, pressed Churchill to either apologize or step down from his position. Soon after, a Facebook post attributed to Churchill emerged, claiming he had expressed regret for upsetting supporters. The post addressed the people of Uganda, acknowledging the seriousness of the situation and emphasizing the need for unity. It also included a personal apology to his father, Nyanzi, for causing pain and embarrassment, while affirming his love and respect despite their differences.
Churchill later took to his X platform to clarify that he does not use Facebook and labeled the apology as fake, urging the public to dismiss it. He promised to address the nation about his role as Guild President at an appropriate time through his official social media channels, encouraging people to remain vigilant.
Despite his clarification, the response has intensified the anger of many National Unity Platform supporters, who have escalated their online attacks against him. At the same time, Churchill is gaining considerable backing from others who believe his duties as Guild President of Makerere University left him with few options in the matter.
