A profound sense of shock and sorrow has enveloped Kamuli and Kayunga districts today, following the sudden and tragic death of Kamuli LC5 Chairperson, Charles Maxwell Mugude. Mugude, who was en route to pick up his nomination papers from the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission offices, was killed in a head-on collision on the Kayunga–Galiraya road in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the fatal accident involved Mugude’s vehicle and a sugarcane truck. The Kamuli political leader was behind the wheel at the time of the crash. While details regarding other potential occupants in his car remain unconfirmed, sources indicate Mugude died instantly due to the immense impact.
Preliminary accounts suggest the sugarcane truck was moving downhill when it reportedly lost control, veering into Mugude’s lane. The front of his vehicle was severely damaged in the collision, leaving no chance for survival.
Mugude was seeking re-election for the LC5 Chairperson position, a role he had held since 2021. A dedicated member of the ruling NRM party, he was widely recognized for his hands-on leadership style and his effective grassroots mobilization efforts within Kamuli district.
Security teams and traffic police quickly responded to the accident site, cordoning off the area as investigations into the precise cause of the crash commenced. By midday, NRM officials at the party headquarters in Kampala confirmed Mugude’s death.
The untimely passing of Chairperson Mugude leaves a significant void in the political landscape of Kamuli. Family members, his vast network of supporters, and district leaders are expected to convene in Kamuli to finalize funeral arrangements and pay their last respects to a leader who served his community diligently.
