A shocking incident unfolded early this morning in Kampala when a yet-to-be-identified man jumped from the rooftop of the Garden City building, stunning early shoppers and commuters.
The man, believed to be between 25 and 30 years old, plunged from the high-rise and landed on a parked vehicle, causing severe injuries and damage to the car, which bore the registration number UAS 797K.
Eyewitnesses at the scene recounted the terrifying moment. “I heard people screaming and looked up just in time to see him falling. It all happened so fast,” said one shop attendant who was preparing to open for the day.
The man landed with a thud, immediately drawing a crowd of onlookers, some of whom feared he had died on impact.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Mr. Emilian Kayima, confirmed the incident and provided preliminary details. He said, “The man is currently admitted at Mulago National Referral Hospital.
He sustained multiple fractures but is alive and receiving treatment. We are yet to identify him officially as he had no form of identification on him.”
Authorities have not ruled out mental health issues as a contributing factor. Mr. Kayima stressed the need for public awareness about mental health, urging citizens to seek help rather than resort to such drastic actions.
“We are calling on friends, families, and communities to pay attention to the mental well-being of their loved ones,” he stated.
Upon recovery, the man is expected to face charges of attempted suicide, an offence still criminalised under Ugandan law.
The police have launched an investigation into what might have led to the attempted suicide, including whether the man had any connection to the businesses within Garden City or if he was a visitor.
The incident disrupted business at the popular commercial complex, with security officers cordoning off the area for investigations. Several shops opened later than usual as the scene drew crowds and media attention.
This morning’s tragedy highlights the growing concern about mental health issues in Uganda.
Advocates continue to call for reform, including decriminalizing attempted suicide and improving access to mental health services across the country.
Authorities are urging anyone who may recognize the man to come forward and assist with identification and family contact. Meanwhile, his condition remains critical but stable, according to medical sources at Mulago Hospital
