Deadly Ambush: Six Armed Robbers Gunned Down in Fiery Police Chase in Nyanama

Six suspected armed robbers met their gruesome end in Nyanama this evening during a high-stakes police operation aimed at foiling a daylight robbery targeting a bank customer.

The fierce encounter unfolded following intelligence that the gang was planning to ambush a client who had just withdrawn a substantial amount of money from a local bank branch at West Hills Mall.

According to the Ghana Police Service, a joint team from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and National Crime Intelligence intercepted the suspects as they trailed their victim along the Nyanama-Ofankor stretch.

Eyewitnesses reported a chaotic scene as gunfire erupted, sending pedestrians scrambling for safety.

“Three suspects were neutralized near the traffic intersection at Alajo Junction as they attempted to escape on motorbikes,” said Superintendent Kwame Boateng, spokesperson for the Greater Accra Regional Police. “Two others were gunned down along Railways Link Road, while the sixth was shot while trying to blend into a crowd near Liberty Fuel Station.”

One suspect, believed to be the leader of the gang, sustained critical injuries and is currently under heavy guard at the Ridge General Hospital. All six deceased suspects have been taken to the Police Hospital morgue for identification and autopsy.

Local residents were left stunned by the brazen nature of the attempted robbery. Kwabena Mensah, a commercial motorbike rider who witnessed the chase, described a scene resembling an action movie.

“I saw them being chased by men in black jackets on unmarked bikes and a white van. Shots were fired from both sides. It was terrifying,” he recounted.

Police say the group had long been under surveillance and was linked to a string of robberies targeting bank customers across Accra and Kasoa.

These incidents often involved suspects on fast-moving motorcycles tailing victims and attacking at secluded junctions or traffic stops.

Officers recovered three motorcycles, two pistols, a crowbar, and a bag believed to contain surveillance equipment used to track their victims.

Authorities are now on a manhunt for the remaining accomplices believed to have fled the scene.

“The message is clear — there is no safe haven for criminals in Ghana,” Superintendent Boateng declared.

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, especially around banking facilities. The police have promised to increase patrols around major financial institutions and traffic intersections across the capital.
